There are actually at present two developmental styles accessible to interested developers that are the Development Kit 1 & Improvement Kit 2, of course DK2 has improvements over DK1 but the final version is said to be a big leap ahead of DK2 which is a superb thing since people have reported that while DK2 is amazing, it can be better.

The virtual reality technology behind it is controlled by a camera and multipule sensors placed on the actual VR headset for motion tracking. The device can track 360 degrees of motion for a truly immersive and interactive experience.

Controlling the pitch, roll and yaw using your head will definitely contribute to extra immersive gameplay but I have a feeling this will also alter the very way games are made in the future as it really seems this hardware is here to stay with it is mold breaking, path paving leap break through virtual reality experience.

The device itself is fairly simple with two small lenses each displaying the same image giving the sensation of “being in the 3D world”. The resolution for each lense is currently 640×800 but is said to be upgraded to 1920×1080 once it hits the consumer market which means a major upgrade in quality compared to it’s current display.

On top of all this hype one of the lead programmers from ID Software has jumped ship to join up the ranks for the development, John Carmack who’s had a huge hand in creating 3D games from as far back as the early 90′s and has proven that he is very well suited to be a part of this project.
If you’ve paid attention to the Oculus Rift in the news you would know that Facebook bought the Oculus rift for a whopping of $2 billion dollars. There has been a bunch of mixed emotions from people about this from the creator of MineCraft (Markus Persson) to Oculus Rift KickStarter Donaters to people who are just interested in virtual Reality in general.

Some people believe Facebook buying the Oculus Rift means the vr device which promised to change the way we play video games is going to be nothing more then another way to socially interact with the people we have on our friends list, others think it will lead to advertisement nightmares of being spammed with ads while either having a VR social experience or even while playing a VR game. Has the Oculus Rift given the middle finger to gamers by deciding to allow Facebook to take over? Only the future will tell.
